Surface Reconstruction from Misregistered Data

A common problem in fitting, or reconstructing, 3D surfaces is the need to register multiple sets of measurements into a common coordinate system. This occurs, for example, if multiple range images are taken to cover the entire surface of an object and the range imager’s viewpoints are not precisely known. Much previous work on registration depends on the identification of corresponding point landmarks; however, identifiable landmarks are not always available when reconstructing general 3D surfaces. Previous approaches to registration without landmarks are usually pairwise algorithms, that is, they only handle two data sets at a time, and, more importantly, they are asymmetric, requiring the part of the surface represented by the measurements in the first data set to be a subset of that part of the surface corresponding to the measurements in the second. In this paper, we present an iterative refinement method that estimates multiple registration transformations, starting from an approximate initial registration, while simultaneously reconstructing the surface. The method has proven to be effective, as demonstrated by a number of examples using both simulated and real data.
